U.S. VISA PHOTO
Can you reuse an old U.S. visa photo?
Photos are processed in your browser. They are never uploaded to any server.
For a U.S. visa application, the Department of State says the photo should have been taken within the last six months and reflect your current appearance. If your face has changed significantly, take a new one even when the old photo is younger than six months.

The six-month rule is not the only test
The Department of State guidance says a photo may be rejected if it no longer reflects how you look. It lists significant facial surgery or trauma, numerous or large facial piercings or tattoos, and significant weight loss or gain as examples of changes that may require a new image.
The guidance also says a beard or hair color change would not generally count as a significant appearance change if you can still be identified. That is a general statement, not a promise that a particular post will accept a specific older image.
What about children?
The same page says a child under 16 generally does not need a new photo just because of normal aging. The consular officer still decides whether the photo is acceptable. Check the instructions for the child’s exact application.
Use the original image, not an edited face
Do not try to update an old photo with a filter, face swap, retouching or other digital change to appearance. The Department says photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change how you look. Take a new photograph when the existing one is out of date.
- Check when the photo was taken.
- Compare it with your current appearance, not only the date.
- If your appearance changed significantly, retake it.
- Review the relevant application’s file or print instructions.
Can cropping make a photo “recent”? No. A crop changes the frame, not the date or the person’s appearance. A new original is the safer choice when either of those tests fails.
U.S. Department of State photo guidance checked September 23, 2026. Final acceptance rests with the embassy or consulate handling the application.
